  • About the Edition

This volume contains 39 contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Granular and Porous Materials. The Symposium reviewed the current understanding of the constitutive behaviour of porous and granular solids, based on experimental data, numerical simulations and micromechanical models. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted, involving the fields of solid mechanics, materials science, geomechanics, chemical engineering and mathematics. This book emphasises the development and use of constitutive laws to model practical processes such as mixing, drainage and drying, compaction of metal and ceramic powders and soils, and instabilities associated with these processes. A common theme is the development of constitutive models from an understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of deformation and fracture. The volume will be of interest to researchers and to engineers concerned with measuring and predicting the response of granular and porous solids for structural applications.

Mathematics and Mechanics of Granular Materials by James M. Hill (Editor), A. P. S. Selvadurai (Editor) Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. The effect of particle size distribution in powder compaction has been studied using the discrete element method. Both isostatic compaction and closed die compaction are Cited by:

Designing for quietness is therefore the most important concept in Engineering Acoustics or Technical Acoustics. The IUTAM Symposium on Designing for Quietness held at the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore in December , was probably the first on this topic anywhere in the world.

Symposium Description: Dynamics of interfaces between fluids and fluids/solids are common in natural and engineered flows. Two-phase flows are key to processes including additive manufacturing, printing, coating, fuel combustion, pipeline transport, nuclear cooling, concentrated solar power, aircraft de-icing, and food preservation, among many others. The IUTAM Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Stochastic Mechanics, held in Trondheim July , , was the eighth of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the application of stochastic methods in mechanics. The previous meetings took place in Coventry, UK (), Sout'hampton, UK (), FrankfurtjOder, Germany (), Stockholm, Sweden (), .
